Friday, I attended the Grand Guarantee Conference put on by Western Waterworks for their vendors and customers. They had a Keynote speaker Walter Bond who spoke on how to live your best life. His main point was to eliminate all excuses. Make the most of every situation. Bond said you get the life you deserve.
Before you blow that thinking off, listen to a little bit of Bond’s story. Bond grew up on the south side of Chicago. His parents were educators. His Father was his High School Principal. Bond played for the High School basketball team, and was highly recruited. At the University of Minnesota, he ended up being a reserve. Bond decided to be the best player off the bench that he could be. Whether he played 5 minutes, 10 minutes or no minutes, he did his extreme best. Soon he was known as the best 6th player in the league.
After college, he was set to take a job in hospital administration when his Dad asked him if still wanted to be in the NBA. Walter said “yes”. So, he worked as hard as he could to get better in that next year and became the first rookie free agent to start for the Dallas Mavericks. He played 8 seasons in the NBA, mostly coming off the bench.
Bond would tell you that attitude is everything. Don’t give in to excuses.Set a vision. Then master the fundamentals of your work.If you keep perfecting the fundamentals, you will get better.
What are the fundamentals of your work? Are you willing to work hard to get great on the fundamentals? Is your attitude going to make you great, or bring you down. You choose.
