The rains have started as Hurricane Hilary moves on shore into California. The path has shifted east so Los Angeles will not be in the center. When we left Mammoth yesterday to make sure we prepared in LA, we didn’t think Mammoth would be directly in the path. Now it is. Mammoth had 70 feet of snow last season, so is a lot more prepared for big weather of this type. Preparing for change in business is a lot like preparing for this hurricane. You know it will hit, but you don’t know exactly where.
The timing of the storm is exactly when predicted. How odd. We aren’t used to predictable catastrophes here. We usually get the jolt in the dark, or sudden fires. So, preparation is usually theoretic. We stock up on water, batteries, dry goods as a matter of course. Seeing the neighbor tarp half their house is a new one.
Preparing for change in business is similar. We saw this in 2006. We knew we had a housing bubble, We could predict some logical fall out for what would hit but it was 2 more years before it landed. We spend a lot of time feeling anxious as we anticipated the future. Fear of bad consequences is a pretty good motivator, but if we don’t take steps way ahead we won’t be able to put on a new roof 3 days before the hurricane hits.
What do you know you need to do in your business today to protect your organization from catastrophes? Cybersecurity is a great place to start, but maybe you need to check your roof and drainage system for your buildings and your work force.
Fingers crossed, the damage will be light from hurricane Hilary and we will get off with a warning.
