I’m asking for 2 hours a day where your phone and all social media is off, the door is closed and you have private work time. I’m asking you to have a weekly plan for what you will do in that time: your most important priority, your creative think time, your analysis of competitive conditions in the market, the future of your company, your industry, you….
Why do I think this would get you better results? Well, look at you! Look at all of us.
We switch between tech devices 21 times an hour, according to a study by OMD UK, a London based media agency that asked 200 people to record how many times they toggle between mobile devices, laptops and other devices. Dr. Larry Rosen, of CSU Dominguez Hills found that students focus on school work for only 3 minutes before being distracted.
I think we spend most of work time reacting to the urgent, the less important and the noisy. What if we changed all that for just 2 hour each day? Maybe for you, it is 4 hours a week in a block. Or an 8 hour stretch every other week. Well then, try it. If you can’t actually do it, go back to 2 hours a day.
It is your time. You are choosing how you use it.
