Reviewing Brendon Burchard’s High Performing Habits with my KEY group this week, a mindshift happened in the group. Burchard had spent over a decade researching what motivates people to perform at higher levels of success. He boiled it down to 6 habits. First we reviewed what those were, then he suggested that we reframe our roles to “what is required of me to be of service here?”
Thinking of who to BE as a leader: what is needed in the situation, what do I need to be in this moment to get the best outcome, which habit should I emphasize.
The discussion that followed was robust. Many in the group were not familiar with the servant leadership model. Robert Greenleaf wrote the seminal text on this in 1977. He put into words the framework that inspires consistent performance in leaders he observed.
Burchard rephrased it based on the leaders he studied and broke it down into 6 habits you can focus on to get better overtime. Life long learners love breaking stuff down into simple steps you can practice – just like elite athletes.
There are 3 personal habits – seeking clarity, generating energy and raising necessity.
And, there are 3 social habits – increasing productivity, developing influence and demonstrating courage.
We assessed ourselves on which habits we do well and where we need more work. We focused on habit 2 – generating energy. It had never occurred to many Members that they were responsible for the energy in the room. Just gathering their own energy felt overwhelming sometimes. To “fake” more energy felt unnatural. Yet, if that was “required of me to be of service here” they could immediately adapt.
How powerful was the shift in the room at that moment! Everyone walked away with new tools that will make their leadership journeys better.
