Fútbol (soccer) is not a deep tradition in the U.S. So hosting the FIFA 2026 World Cup has been enthralling for many Americans who never really watched it the way they watch American football, baseball and basketball. Since these are the national teams, even the Manchester United backers or Barca fans are watching their teams scrambled up. It is hard to put a political spin on Spain versus Argentina. Although I saw a hilarious roast on Instagram from a Latino American about Spain being the stern stepfather versus Argentina being the mean sneaky cousin.
This has been such an opportunity to create new connections and new topics of conversation with acquaintances. There is a definite relief from the grim state of conversation in the U.S. It feels safe to talk about. What team are you supporting (after the US). And, why? The foreign born US citizens I’ve spoken with are grinning from ear to ear as they enthusiastically support England, Mexico, Switzerland, Colombia, or Brazil. Instead of hiding their country of origin as foreign born US citizens find safer to do these days, they can joyously celebrate their birth countries. For all of us, as the field narrowed, folks chose their second, or third favorites until they gave up and just enjoyed the rivalry.
And, isn’t that so refreshing? Opinions lightly held. No demonization of the other. This is an opportunity to shift our conversations to what brings us together rather than what might tear us apart. An opportunity to be FOR decency. It has been a lovely few weeks.
