“Let’s talk about what truly separates effective leaders from the rest. It’s not only charisma or technical skills—it’s their ability to cultivate Hope in their teams.” – Yira Muse, Ph.D. and Vistage Speaker.
She goes on:
“What most people get wrong about Hope in leadership:
❌ Hope = staying positive when things get tough
✅ Hope = having clear goals + multiple pathways + the agency to execute”
GOALS – Clear, meaningful objectives that inspire action. Leaders who excel help their teams set specific, achievable goals that connect to a larger purpose. When people know where they’re headed, engagement follows.
️ PATHWAYS – Multiple routes to success. The best leaders don’t just point to the destination—they help their teams identify various ways to get there. When obstacles arise (and they will), Hopeful leaders already have Plan B, C, and D ready.
AGENCY – The belief that “I can make this happen”. This is where leadership magic happens. “Great leaders build their team’s confidence and motivation, fostering the mindset that challenges are solvable and goals are achievable.”
An immediate way to make this actionable is to build on this framework with one of the many brilliant tactics suggested by Vistage Speaker Steve Heroux of the Sales Collective: gamify the everyday with a Daily Performance 100. Build with your team a series of daily activities that should lead to success. Create a point system for each activity based on how important it is to do and how much success it could bring, and set a basic daily standard. If the team is executing every day, you are most likely to be successful and if they have multiple avenues to explore each day, with the agency to do it no micromanagement will be required.
Imagine the fun culture of hope this creates.
