Is other people’s thinking taking over your sense of the world around you? In the run up to the midterm elections the frenzy has been crazy making. You’d think the whole world was falling apart. If you turn off the radio, television, twitter, facebook, etc. does your sense that the world is falling apart go away? Despite all that we hear these days, I say, fear not! Go outside and take a long walk.
We’ve been doing a lot of long walks lately. Yes, we are consciously trying to get into better health. But it is more than that. When I work out on the Nordic track, I watch the news. All bad news, right? If I do Pilates, I listen to the news. More to fear. When I walk or hike, I don’t have any media with me. Oh wow! Maybe that is why I enjoy it more. I reflect on life, I smell the Eucalyptus trees. I look for bunnies and squirrels and pat the dogs that pass. I come home refreshed and a little more sane.
I don’t mean to indicate that there are not real problems that need to be addressed in this country. And, I hope that everyone goes and votes on Tuesday. I am addressing the fear mongering. I believe in the power of our people to come together and find solutions. I believe in talking across the divide. I believe in respecting and talking to people from every walk of like, every country, every religion. I think everyone, everywhere, wants their children to grow up healthy and lead a better life if they can.
So fear NOT! And spread not fear. Go out for a long walk and be grateful. If you have a roof over your head and food for the week, it will probably be okay.
