The acupuncturist pushed her thumbs into the side of my hip and I yelped in pain. Acute, sharp pain. As she worked that area it was excruciating. When I went home I felt it open up and I was able to stretch it out. Three weeks later she did it again. How could I feel so normal when my hip was tied in knots?

We live with chronic pain — physical, psychic, and/or emotional and it becomes our “normal”. Hip pain, digestive issues, sleeplessness, stress, we get used to it. We work around it. So when do we decide to address it? Usually, when it becomes acute enough physically to take it to the doctor, or a crisis in business to our peer group.

Does it have to be this way? Try these 3 techniques to assess your own normal

  1. Lay on your bed and do a body scan from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Does your head ache, is your neck stiff, is your breathing shallow…..take 3-5 minutes to assess. What is bothering you and what could you do about it. Head aches? Maybe drink a lot of water today and see if that makes a difference. Stiff, do 5 minutes of stretching. Take a 20 minute walk/stroll when the air feels fresh.
  2. Assess your coming work week. Can you book out the time with yourself for strategy or a needed project that gets you ahead of the chaos? Or schedule your meetings with a 15 minute break in between to make that phone call or step outside and breathe?
  3. Check in with a friend or family member. I’m feeling …….,and suggestions? If your partner is always telling you “you need to……” maybe you have your first clue.

You can get to a healthier normal. We all can.
