In the worst case scenario. say, you were in a car accident, would someone know the password for your phone, or for your computer? Who has your Medical Power of Attorney if you are unconscious? Who makes decisions about your treatment? Who runs the company?

This week, one of my Vistage Members was in a car accident and is still unconscious. His daughters are in this exact situation. Yes, there are family members helping them, his attorney and business advisors have stepped in and his Vistage group is ready to help as he recovers. But, they still have not recovered his passwords.

There is something so universal about this. We don’t want to plan for extraordinary events especially bad ones, yet we know they happen. In my manufacturing days, we did advanced scenario planning as if all employees would be stuck at work for 3 days – including food, water, blankets, alternative toilets if the plumbing is destroyed, etc. I used to have a pair of running shoes, socks, water bottles, and snacks in my trunk in case I had to make my way home by foot the 17 miles between my plant and my house. Or, I got stuck along the way. Earthquakes are real.

The last time we had a small earthquake the power went out. My husband was surprised how quickly I had lanterns and flashlights out. I had power chargers ready for the computers and phones so we could operate for a couple of days if needed. Luckily, the power came back on about 25 minutes later. We realized we needed to replace some of the back up food and water supply we keep in case we need 3 days worth.

Be prepared.  This week, make sure someone you trust, perhaps your attorney, has your master password and instructions for your financial care. Make sure someone you trust has written designation as your Medical Power of Attorney, and that your doctor knows who that is. Make sure you have back up chargers for your phones and computers. Have flashlights and batteries. Get prepared. May you never need it, but you will be grateful if do.
