The trick or treat economy continues to be extremely tricky and getting trickier. Darth Vader is the costume of choice for our 5 year old Grandson and it seems right in line with the shut down of the federal government.  Should we be handing out gift cards for the parents or candy to the kids this Friday night? Maybe both.

It is critical for small and midsize businesses to do whatever it takes to stay profitable in this highly volatile environment. I’ve been saying that for months. At the same time, it is  important to support our neighbors and our communities. People are losing their jobs, their healthcare costs are skyrocketing, SNAP is ending effective November 1, farmers can’t sell their crops. The misery is real and rising. And, that is before AI takes more jobs.

What do we as individuals do about it? Be kind. Be generous. Don’t allow hate talk or blame in your presence. If you can, donate extra generously to the non-profits in your community. If you can help someone get work, do it. If you have to lay people off, be kind.

There is always opportunity in chaos. Keep searching for it. AI deserves a lot of focus for creating new opportunities for how to do things. Everyone can spend a little time here. Improving your communication on LinkedIn, and your brand messaging in general is low cost and high potential.  Streamline your most annoying processes. Practice 5S. Organize your workspace. Do something positive.

It is spooky and getting spookier. Pick the best costume you can. Then go out there and take action.
