Do you know about or are you addicted to playing wordle? It is a NY Times owned game that you can access for free that asks you to guess what 5 letter word they have in mind in 6 or fewer tries. You can only play it once each 24 hours and it takes less than 10 minutes to play. For millions of people it is a harmless guilty pleasure . It usually makes you feel a little accomplished each day….better than making your bed. And, it is binge-proof.
How can we use the psychology behind that in other areas of our lives? How can we create small fun useful moments, perhaps to get us to a health or business goal? Perhaps, you would call them small hacks or gamifying boring but necessary tasks.
Here are a few I do:
- I have 2- 8 pound weights in a cute stacker (thanks to my son-in-law who was going to throw them out), sitting by my desk and in between meetings I will grab them and do reps. It has to help somehow, right?
- I throw 10 pieces of clothing I rarely wear in a bag each week and donate it once a month. It gets my closet a little cleaner.
- I have a list of people who I want to check in with. In that moment when I’m stuck waiting for a text back or someone to join a zoom call, I connect with a text or email.
Brief moments can add up to progress. If you have some, please share. Create wordle moments in your management meetings with a gift card for the one whose proposal is most liked by the team. It is continuous improvement without pain. Enjoy!
