I realized today that it’s been a year of Sunday blogs. In reviewing them, I noticed that I talk a lot about measurement. I also talk a lot about creating successful habits or practices. My blog allows me to be creative, to share my observation of leaders and business practices, and to be bossy. Let me say a bit more…

Measurement– Every business measures revenue and profits. Every doctor measures weight, blood pressure, temperature and pulse. Every sport measures a score that defines who won and who lost. However, the elite – The Great Ones – measure the Key Performance Indicators that create those final numbers. Show me those KPI’s and my heart races.

Successful Habits and Practices-This world is too complex to wing it. The Olympian wins by 1/100 of a second. The competition is world class. We have to make it a daily practice. Focus can be our greatest competitive advantage.

Creativity-The ability to imagine something in your mind and then make it into concrete reality is the essence of creativity. Business leaders do this every day. Is it artistry? Is it challenging? Is it risky? Yes, yes and yes. This is why it is so hard for many to retire or to slow down. It is just plain fun.

Observation-My daily work with so many different leaders provides a window into business patterns, great leadership, systemic flaws, and best practices. From the outside, I can see patterns that aren’t obvious to those in the midst of it. Sometimes, it just takes one small tweak, sometimes it is a wrenching change in strategy….

Bossiness-I get to put it all together and suggest improvements. This is my chance to say what I think works across many different companies and management styles. What an honor! You might not agree with my suggestions, but I hope you make one small step each week.

Remember, “If change is happening on the outside of a company faster than on the inside, the end is in sight.”- Jack Welch
